What is Common Contents Insurance?
Common Contents Insurance is a type of insurance that covers items of property that are not deemed to be part of the building and therefore considered contents items.
In Australia, Common Contents Insurance is usually offered separate to the building cover in the policy, and usually it's offered at 1% of the Building Sum Insured. Common Contents Insurance can cover a wide range of items, including:
- Furniture
- Artwork
- Pool and gym equipment that is not permanently affixed to the building
- Gardening equipment
- Carpets in common areas
Some insurers will automatically cover Common Contents Insurance with no provision to remove the cover. Others will give you the ability to decrease cover for a reduced Premium. But just keep in mind that if your Sum Insured for common contents is 1% of the Building Sum Insured, the premium is probably going to be less than .5% of the total premium. Any reductions in cover to Common Contents Insurance may not have a material impact on premiums.
If you have high value contents items like very high value artwork, you might want to consider increasing your cover.
